When I was a child, I often thought, "What is a rainbow? Why is it * round?" Do you know the answers? ■What is a rainbow? A rainbow is * reflected * sunlight. After rain, the sky is full of very small water * drops. Sunlight is reflected by these water drops. Then, why can we see some colors? Look at Picture A.  Sunlight comes from our back and * hits a water drop and goes into it. At that time, it is * bent and broken into some colors. For example, red, yellow, green, blue and * violet. Each light of those colors * goes its own way. And when they hit the back of a water drop, they reflect back toward the front. (1)Then, the reflected lights are bent again when they leave a water drop . Violet light leaves at an * angle of 40° * relative to sunlight, and red light leaves at an angle of 42°. Lights of other colors leave a water drop at angles between 40° and 42° . Then, you may think you see violet light on top of a rainbow and red light on the * bottom. But the rainbow I saw was different. [ (2)-a ] light is on top of a rainbow and [ (2)-b ] light is on the bottom. There is [ C ] straight rainbow. Why is a rainbow round? Let's think of red light in a rainbow, for example. Red light leaves water drops at an angle of 42°relative to sunlight and reaches your eyes. When you see red light, your eyes, the sun and a water drop make the angle of 42°. Water drops which make this angle * are located * in a circle. To understand this, imagine a * cone which is put * flat-end down in a glass. Look at Picture C.
In this example the * side of the glass is sunlight. The bottom of the glass is water drops. The side of the cone is reflected red light, and the * tip of the cone is your eyes. In this case, the angle between the side of the glass and the side of the cone is always 42°. (5)Then you see round red light. We can explain other colors in the same way. In this way we see a round rainbow. When you are on the ground, you cannot see * below the * horizon. Then you see only a part of a rainbow [ (6)-a ] the horizon.
