Today,I'm going to tell you about the word in my mind. It is the word "why". I think it has a wonderful power. I'll show you some examples. When I was in Japan, the Japanese people around me often didn't express their ideas and opinions clearly. So I was sometimes afraid because I couldn't understand what they had in their minds. One day my Japanese friend taught me,"In Japan, we sometimes want others to understand our ideas and opinions without esxpressing them clearly." I was surprised and thought, "Why are Japanese people like this?" I really wanted to find the answer. So I came back to college and started to study Japanese culture. The word "why" brought me here. Last week I got an e-mail from a Japanese student studying science at college. It says she still remembers a star with a beautiful tail in the night sky. One night she found it and watched it for a long time. She asked her father about it. He said, "It's the Comet Hale-Bopp. It will come back again in many years." She was very interested in it. "Why does it have a tail and come back again?" she thought. She has studied science hard since then. The word "why" may make her a scientist. Last October, two Japanese people, Mr Masatoshi Koshiba and Mr. Koichi Tanaka got the Nobel Prize in science! I hear that they are now very popular scientists in Japan. I have been interested in famous scientists who got the Nobel Prize and bought some books about them. I have found some of them were not very great students in school. But they often said to their teachers,"Why?" When they grew up, they still had the word in their minds and always tried to find the answer. The word "why" made them great in the world. Do you understand the wonderful power of the word "why" now? I believe the word sometimes rises in your minds also. But it doesn't have enough power yet. It is just like a seed in your minds. In nature, when a seed is put into the earth and given enough water, it begins to grow. With water, it grows and grwos. I think water is just like learning. It's important for you to give water to your seeds. I hope you all have seeds in your minds and give enough water to them. ---------------------------------------------------------------- ━＜ ４．塾長のコメント ＞━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 私の「先読み」はずれてはいませんでしたが、テーマは全く違いました ね。「なぜ？」のもつ力についてのお話でした。 確かに「なぜ」を追求するお話は科学者の伝記によく出てきます。エジ ソンが幼い頃「１＋１＝２」となることが理解できなかった、という有 名なお話は、「１＋１がなぜ２となるのか、２にならない場合もあるの ではないか・・・」と深く考えていたんでしょうね。またニュートンの 有名な「りんご」のお話も、「りんごはなぜ落ちるのか」という問いか けをしていたんでしょう。「りんごは、重いから落ちるのよ！」と考え るのが凡人。「重いとなぜ落ちるのか」「軽いものは落ちないのか」 「落ちる、というのはどういう意味なのか」・・・・と深く追求するの が優秀な科学者ということでしょうかね。あなたは凡人で終わりそうで すか？それとも優秀な科学者になれそうな予感がありますか？ ところで「なぜ」を追求することは科学の分野だけでなく、あらゆると ころで大切なことなのです。高校の数学は「なぜそうなるか」を答案に 書かないと点数がもらえません。（小）論文を書くときも、「なぜ」を 追求することがよい論文を書く第一歩になります。 ということで秋田県では、新しく高校に入学する人たちに「高校生は是 非”なぜ”を追求してくださいね」というメッセージをこの入試問題に 込めたのではないでしょうか？ ※ところで the Comet Hale-Bopp [ ヘール・ボップ彗（すい）星 ]って ハレー彗星のことですかね？知っている人がいたら教えてください。 |
